about the Noah's Ark Mural

The Noah's Ark Mural at overnewton Anglican Community College is a ceramic and mosaic mural that is being made for the Junior building at the Keilor Campus. All of the children from the Junior school as well as year 5's and some of the year 8's will be making a ceramic artwork to go into the mural. The mural design is a Noah’s Ark scene with the animals coming out of the Ark after the flood and after the trees have regrown. The landscape will be that of the Keilor valley that you can see to the left of the wall. It becomes a continuation of the landscape in which the school sits. All of the animals in the scene will be native animals of Victoria. On the left and top there will be a rainbow border of coloured tiles featuring some with animals painted by year 5 students. The tiles will be pre-bisqued tiles that have been painted first with a bright coloured underglaze and then with a sketch of an animal painted on top. There will be a Wave border around the bottom and right side of the mural, which will include text and native fish. The mural will be full of animals to find and talk about. It will also be bright, colourful and joyful. Whilst celebrating a favourite Christian story, the mural will also remind us that we need to look after the earth and its creatures. The process of making the mural During the year the artist Debbie Qadri will be working with the students to make ceramic artworks for the mural. Halfway through term 3 she will begin gluing the ceramic artworks onto the wall and will fill hte gaps with mosaic from broken tiles. In terms 3 and 4 Debbie will be working with the Year 8 students to make the larger creatures for the mural, the kangaroos, emus, koalas etc. The year 8's will learn about making the creatures and about how to glue them onto the mural and to grout them. Below are some photos of the wall that it is going on. Look how excited Debbie is about the size of the project.
